As for myself, I am building my business in the cloud... That is me and my situation. I work out of my home and at one time I did have a large server running in my office performing all the duties that I needed it to perform, email, monitoring as well as file storage. I then of course had to make sure that it was being backed up.

The cost of the server per month in electricity was approx $20.00, but that was nothing to the noise and the amount of heat the unit produced. Obviously this was not a brand new server, if it were the cost and heat would not have been as big of a issue. It was around 5 years old....

I migrated my Exchange Server to Google Apps Premier, and it has performed it main function without fail, email and calendar. It does not have and probably will never have all the functions that Exchange has, but it suits my purpose. It is a wonderful thing to be able to search all of your email from a Droid phone. Could never do that with a Blackberry, Windows Mobile, or Iphone on Exchange.

I moved all of my files which were needed to Dropbox, if you don't know what this is, then I would suggest that you go to the site and check it out. All of my files live in the cloud and are available to all of my devices, droid, mac, pc doesn't matter. 2 GB are free to start so check it out.

Monitoring, you don't need this unless you are a MSP, but I will mention it anyway. I use a service that monitors all 400plus servers and workstations in the cloud. I do pay a little more, but I do not have to worry with the server, updates or any of the other issues around keeping a monitoring service up and running. I also have my PSA running in the cloud.

The only applications that I use that are not in the cloud is Quickbooks and Office... I think that is pretty cool. Regardless of the device that is with me I can access all my files and data for a very reasonable amount.
Some may be a bit of the top, still funny none the less. I'm sure all of us can relate to a text going out not quite the way we intended.
Windows Mobile always felt like a severely stripped down version of the desktop OS, and perhaps that was there intent, but it really just didn't work for the masses. Rim did a great job at of integrating the Phone and Messaging, and has held the position for years, until Apple came out with the iPhone. Not that I am a huge fan of the iPhone, but it truly did cause a shift in the mobile OS world.

Now that a little time has passed since the iPhone, we have seen Microsoft's Windows Mobile is gone from the market and Nokia is not a player in the U.S. market at the moment. But Android is everywhere... Android a small mobile OS purchased by Google has and is taking the market by storm. It has been a game changer, and has every one's attention to say the least. Take a look the Moto Atrix which is on the AT&T network. This design shows Microsoft's window of opportunity.

If Microsoft can provide a stable platform which would allow the user to bring there "desktop" in their pocket they will once again capture the market. If you look at the Atrix, a phone which docs and turns into a laptop, that is brilliant. Yes it can open word docs, excel, power point presentations, but only in a limited fashion. It cannot interact with a host of other business applications. Windows Phone 7 is a nice phone by today's standards, but it is a little late to the party. Make this phone where I can use it for business, with real security.

Here is the winning recipe.

AD integration

Ability to dock and turn into laptop

Fun

That is all that they need to do, in my humble opinion of course.

The backup would fail and I could not seem to find the problem.

The problem turns out to be related to the VSS writers, and was not the easiest thing to find the fix for. The fix itself is easy, just knowing about is not.
Microsoft Support KB Go to this link to look at the KB and the resolve.SuperDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685031656196530878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727659750679129128.post-61253883431234683532011-02-28T20:26:00.000-08:002011-02-28T20:26:35.957-08:00To go Pro or not to go ProI did it! Wasn't easy, truly wasn't. I now have a Mac Book Pro with a dual core processor. I could have simply gotten the Macbook for $40.00 less, but I felt the difference was worth it for the Aluminum unibody if no other reason at all.

Since the new Pros came out with the i5 and i7 processors the older ones have really come down in price, which I took advantage of....

I have been told by endless mac users about how easy the mac is to setup etc, well I really don't see any difference. I had to patch the OS just like windows, and I'm having to install office just like windows. There really isn't a whole lot of difference from windows....

Hardware - from a purely technical spec point of view this system was not a good deal at all. The processor is a generation behind, but it does have 4gb of ram and a 250gb hd. From that point of view I paid at least twice the value for this computer. Quality and feel??? I must say that I am very impressed with the fit and finish of this piece of equipment. The keyboard is a absolute pleasure to type on, and having a backlit keyboard is something I am really enjoying too. The feel of the unibody construction is solid if nothing else.

I feel as if I am speaking out of both sides of my mouth, and I guess I am. I guess it comes down to this. I really don't see the big deal with the software, but I am enjoying the hardware. Not to happy as to why I had to purchase this darn thing either....

Those are my thoughts.... The things are so different from a Window gui, you almost think they do their best to make it as different as possible... in some cases it is an exact mirror opposite of windows.

Regardless, I find myself about to walk out the door and purchase one. I find it terribly troubling to force myself to by one. Why is it, I have such a mental block when it comes to these things. The hardware is great and the QA is great, I suppose it is just the fact that I feel I must purchase one and I don't want to purchase one.

I will keep you apprised of my delve into the mac world. I already have my plans to become mac certified. Another cert is all that I need.SuperDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685031656196530878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727659750679129128.post-989949479168467092011-02-28T13:52:00.000-08:002011-02-28T13:52:30.471-08:00Home Server FollowupMS Home Server is worth it. I cannot say anything negative in reference to this device other than MS is about to change it which I really do not like.

Drive Pooling works wonders in the current release and will not come with the next version, however I have heard that there are some 3rp party vendors that will have it available as a option in the new release.

My current configuration of the home server is 7TB of storage, and I'm using this space to backup files from select clients which gives them a form of offsite backups. I also use it to keep all of my photos movies and other digital treasures in, not to mention keeping full backups of all of my families pc's. Truly a great value if for nothing other than that.SuperDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685031656196530878noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727659750679129128.post-14497390201978520802010-12-27T12:43:00.000-08:002010-12-27T13:11:36.793-08:00Home Server - is it worth it?I have had a server for years now on and off, just depended on what I was doing and if there was a need. Running a full server in a home enviroment does have some major draw backs. But we are not here to talk about that. We are here to talk about the alternative, a Home Server. The one I chose is the one you find in the link, a Lenovo D400.

There are many manufacturers of Home Server hardware out there Acer, HP, and others prices vary as well as the configurations, be sure to get what you need. The reason I chose the D400 is simple, Price. I was able to get it on sale for $239.00 off Amazon so i snapped 1 up for myself and a couple of more for clients, the silly things are now over $400.00 again on Amazon, and I don't know why.

The D400 has the Atom chipset as well as 4 hot swappable had drive trays. My unit shipped with one 1 TB hard drive, I filled the other 3 bays with SATA drives I already had on hand. Two 1.5TB drive and One 500GB drive for a total 4.5TB storage on the system. We'll get more into that later.

The D400 is a solid unit but it is the OS that made me want to purchase a home server. The OS is Microsoft Home Server, which is built upon Windows Server 2003, which is a very solid OS and is still in production in businesses around the world.

Windows Home Server (WHS) is a stripped down version of Server 2003, but don't let that keep you from this system... Yes there are a lot of higher functions which are stripped out of the OS, such as it cannot be a DC (domain controller) and it cannot be a member of a domain, however you can still use it as a DNS server, DHCP server, as well as a print server. These are advanced features and you will need advanced server knowledge to configure and take advantage of these services.

WHS is designed for the average home user, hence it is designed to be accessed via a desktop applet. This applet gives you access to all the basic features of the home server as well as backups. Did I say backups? Backups are where this product really shine. WHS will make full image backups of up to 10 workstations, and this includes Apple products as well. That alone makes this product a great value, and that is why I have business clients which have this product in there businesses, simply for the workstation backup.

I would like to briefly go over the storage, as I mentioned i have 4.5TB of storage on my home server, well I have that much in drive space, but not in storage??? Let me explain... WHS does NOT, let me repeat does NOT support raid 5 or any raid for that matter. The system use a process called "folder replication" to duplicate your data across the drives this is what gives your redundancy in your data. This also lets you use whatever drives you have laying around for your home server, it will even accept usb drives into the system.

I enjoy having my home server, it is economical to say the least, and I don't have the heat issues that I had with my full server. I currently have my DVD collection on my server as well as all my business documents. I keep finding more for it to do, and it simply does it.... Not to mention it is so quite, you cannot hear it run.

If you have any questions let me know.

:)SuperDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685031656196530878noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5727659750679129128.post-36821137710092682862010-12-27T12:20:00.000-08:002010-12-27T12:39:46.604-08:00Merry Christmas - Happy New YearI cannot believe that 2010 is just about over. It has been a very interesting year to say the least, and in a lot of ways, I'm really glad to see it go away. As mentioned in a earlier, I have truly been blessed this and life has been good for me personally, however I'm afraid that the state of affairs as it relates to our country as a whole have not fared so well.

We have seen the beginnings of Socialized Medical Care in this country, however I truly believe that it will be repealed in the upcoming year. We have seen the end of the worst Congress in the history of our great country, and we have seen a change in the political tides that have not been seen in over 100 years. Shall we talk about radical islam???? Should we??? You never know who may be looking. You know it is wrong to say anything that may offend a muslim, however it seems to be considered a good deep to offend a Christian??? I find that odd, truly not to mention scary.

I mentioned earlier that I have been purchasing silver as much as possible, and I have continued to do so, and I am happy to say that it has done very well. When I started purchasing silver it was under $20.00 / ounce , now it is a literal hair under $30.00, and that my friend isn't bad at all over 6 months of time. I personally believe that it will top out around $85.00 per ounce. Why shouldn't it? The government in their wisdom has devalued the dollar by at least 20% and demand for this metal is at a all time high, and will continue to remain that way.

I'm sure someone is wanting to know what my hopes are for the next year, and since you asked I will tell you. I hope that obomacare will be repealed in total. I hope that there are true tax cuts put in place to stimulate the economy, and lastly I hope that the people which were just elected to congress will simply do what they were sent there to do. I also pray that there will be return to common sense in this country. I know those are very big things to ask for in this day and age, but it is what it is.

New for the upcoming year will be a huge amount of PADs on the market... iPads, aPads, gPad etc. I do see some utility in these devices, but not the amount that people think. It will not replace a laptop or netbook for that matter, it does however serve to be a good reader and entertainment device. I cannot tell you how many of these devices I have configured for end users simply to be put on the shelf or passed down to a child. It really is funny that that people buy these and then pay someone like me to give them remote access to their pc, and then after a month get me again to roll out a new laptop for them....

That is enough rambling for the moment, and someday I will put some more on here, hopefully sooner than 3 months.SuperDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01685031656196530878noreply@blogger.com0
